Description

La météorite NWA 11921 (Northwest Africa 11921), surnommée Black Beauty, est une roche martienne exceptionnelle découverte dans le désert du Sahara en 2017. Éjectée de Mars il y a 5 à 10 millions d’années, elle constitue la plus ancienne archive martienne connue et l’un des échantillons spatiaux les plus étudiés au monde. 
🔍 Caractéristiques Principales
  • Origine : Mars. C’est une brèche d’impact, c’est-à-dire un agglomérat de différents types de roches formées à la surface de la planète rouge. 
  • Âge : Environ 4,4 milliards d’années. Elle témoigne de la période géologique la plus ancienne de Mars.
      • Composition unique : Contrairement aux autres météorites martiennes, elle est très riche en eau, en potassium et en fer. Sa structure est un mélange complexe de basalte, de cristaux et de magma fondu témoignant du passé volcanique de la planète. 

    📍 Origine sur Mars
    Pendant longtemps, le lieu précis de sa provenance était inconnu. Grâce aux données récoltées par les sondes spatiales, des chercheurs ont réussi à identifier le site exact d’où provient Black Beauty : un cratère d’impact (nommé Karratha) situé dans la région de Terra Cimmeria sur Mars.
